# Google Ads paused for suspicious payment activity? What it means and how to fix it

Your ads have stopped and Google says it has seen suspicious payment activity. That sounds alarming, but it's an identity and payment check, not a judgement on your business, and it has nothing to do with your website. Most accounts get through it by answering Google's questions and verifying the payment method properly, first time. Here's exactly what Google asks for, and the small mistakes that cause long delays.

Google Ads guide · updated 6 November 2026 · 6 minute read

## The short version

- It's a billing check, not a policy breach. Google may pause your account, limit what it can spend, or suspend it until you prove who's paying.
- Paused? Select Answer questions in the notice in your account. When it goes smoothly, Google says you'll get an email within about 10 minutes.
- Most delays come from mismatches: a name on your ID that differs from your payments profile, or a cropped photo of a document.
- Don't open a new account to keep advertising. Google says new accounts created by the advertiser will be suspended too.

## Key numbers

- **10 min**: for Google's email after you confirm your payment method
- **5 days**: business days for a decision on your answers
- **6 digits**: the last six digits of Google's small test charge on your card
- **30 days**: to verify your payment method once Google asks

## Paused or suspended: which do you have?

Google uses suspicious payment activity for two different situations, and the fix depends on which one you're in. The notice at the top of your Google Ads account, and Google's email, tell you which.

Google doesn't publish what makes it flag a payment, so don't read it as an accusation. Treat it as an identity check you need to pass cleanly, first time.

## How to unpause your account

These are the steps Google gives for a paused account. You may not be asked for all of them.

1. **Select Answer questions.** Open your Google Ads account as an admin user and select Answer questions in the notice at the top of the screen.
2. **Answer the payment history questions.** Answer honestly and match what's on your payments profile. Guessing or giving different details from your card or bank account is what causes delays.
3. **Confirm your payment method, if asked.** Google says you'll get an email within about 10 minutes. If you don't, your answers are being reviewed and you should hear within 5 business days.
4. **Make a payment, if asked.** Choose a payment method and select Pay now. The amount is your outstanding balance or an amount Google sets. A bank transfer takes longer to clear than a card, and the account can stay paused until it does.
5. **Enter a verification code, if asked.** Select Get code. Google places a small temporary charge on your card. Look for a charge from Google in your recent transactions: Google says the last six digits of that charge are your code. It's usually quick but can take up to 7 days to show. Enter the code and Google says you'll get a decision within 2 business days.
6. **Wait for the email.** When the account is unpaused, Google emails you. Your ads then start running again.

> **Check who's an admin first.** Only admin users can complete these steps. If whoever set up the account has left, or an agency holds the admin access, sort that out before you start.

## If your account is suspended

Google may ask you to verify your payment method before it looks at your appeal, and says you'll have 30 days to do it. You can usually choose between a verification code, a payment or uploading documents. Google's help page says to go to Admin, then Policy, then Account, and select Confirm your payment method.

If you're asked for documents, Google may want:

- Your legal name, and the name on your Google payments profile
- Your address and date of birth
- An image of a government photo ID
- Proof of address
- An image of the payment method, such as your card

Updates on the appeal come through Google Ads, and updates on verification come from Google Payments. If verification fails, Google emails you the decision with instructions for appealing it.

## Why payment verification fails

Google is strict about documents, and most failures come from small mismatches rather than anything suspicious. Check these before you upload anything.

### Names that don't quite match

Google asks for the same full name in every document. A middle name on your ID but not your payments profile, or a trading name instead of your legal name, can be enough to fail.

### Cropped or partial photos

Google wants the full document with all four corners showing, in colour. A neat crop that cuts off an edge can get it rejected.

### Expired or hard-to-read documents

Documents must be in date and easy to read. Photograph them flat, in good light, with no glare across the text.

### Details that point to different people

Your payments profile, the card and your documents should all belong to the same person or business. Paying with someone else's card, such as a partner's, can cause a mismatch.

## What to do and what to avoid

**Do:**

- Answer every question from the notice in your account, as an admin user
- Use exactly the same full name across your payments profile, card and documents
- Pay any outstanding balance if Google asks
- Send one appeal at a time and wait for the result
- Keep your [business details consistent](https://www.certanza.app/guides/google-ads-advertiser-verification) everywhere Google sees them

**Don't:**

- Open a new account. Google says related accounts and new ones the advertiser creates will be suspended
- Ask your bank to reverse a legitimate Google Ads charge. Chargebacks are a separate reason for suspension
- Use more than one promotional code on an account
- Send several appeals for the same suspension. Google can pause appeals for 7 days if it sees misuse
- Upload edited, cropped or partial documents

## When your website matters too

A payment check doesn't look at your website, and our scan can't see your payments profile. So a scan won't help you pass this check, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Your website matters in two situations. If the notice names a policy such as [misrepresentation](https://www.certanza.app/guides/google-ads-misrepresentation), [unacceptable business practices](https://www.certanza.app/guides/unacceptable-business-practices) or [circumventing systems](https://www.certanza.app/guides/circumventing-systems), you have a policy suspension, not a billing one, and the fixes are on your site. And once your ads run again, Google reviews them and the pages they link to, so it pays to know those pages are in good shape before you start spending.

## Common questions

### What does suspicious payment activity mean in Google Ads?

Google has spotted something about the payments on your account it wants to check, and has paused or suspended the account until you confirm who's paying. Google doesn't publish what triggers it. Answer the questions in the notice in your account and verify your payment method if asked.

### Is suspicious payment activity about my website?

Usually not. It's a billing issue and it's fixed through your payment details. If the notice names a policy such as misrepresentation instead, your website matters a lot more.

### How long does it take to unpause?

Google says you'll usually get an email within about 10 minutes of confirming your payment method. If you don't, your answers are under review and you should hear within 5 business days. After entering a verification code, Google says you'll get a decision within 2 business days.

### What's the small charge on my card?

If you choose a verification code, Google places a temporary charge on your card. Find the charge from Google in your recent transactions: Google says the last six digits of that charge are your code. Google says the charge won't be more than $1.95 and is refunded.

### Can I just open a new Google Ads account?

No. Google says related accounts, such as those sharing an email, payment method or manager account, will be suspended, and so will new accounts the advertiser tries to create. It also makes the original harder to recover.

### Is there an email address I can send my documents to?

No. Google doesn't list one. Everything goes through the notice in your Google Ads account, and decisions come by email from Google. See [where the appeal form is](/guides/google-ads-suspended#where-s-the-appeal-form-and-is-there-an-email) for the other official routes.
